The importance of STD screening
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are far more common than most people realize. While infections like syphilis and gonorrhea are widely recognized, many others—such as chlamydia, genital herpes (HSV), ureaplasma, and HIV—often remain undetected for long periods. More than 30 different pathogens can be transmitted through sexual contact, and because many of them cause few or no symptoms at first, they can easily spread without notice.
This is why regular STD screening is crucial. At Primavera Medical Center in Budapest, our STD Center provides confidential, precise, and professional care using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. Our empathetic approach and highly trained specialists have made us one of the leading private clinics for STD testing and treatment.
Why STD screening matters?
STD screening is recommended for everyone who is sexually active, but it is especially important in the following cases:
Before having a child, both parties
In a new relationship, before the first unprotected intercourse
If you had unprotected sex with a new partner
Any urinary or genital complaints, especially if they are recurrent and unresponsive to treatment
Syphilis symptoms in women: ulcers, rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes
Maybe I caught something, how long should I wait to get tested?
If you suspect you have an STD, it is important to know that there is a certain amount of time required for the pathogens to be detected, called the window period. This is the time period during which the infection cannot be detected by tests because the number of pathogens in the body has not yet reached a detectable level. This is often referred to as the incubation period in colloquial terms.
The duration of detection of various sexually transmitted diseases:
HIV: 3 weeks
Syphilis: 4-5 weeks
Gonorrhea (gonorrhea): 2-5 days
Chlamydia: 2 weeks
HPV and hepatitis: 1 month
If you are considering getting an STD test, it is worth considering the window periods based on the time of your last sexual intercourse. If you test too early, the infection may not be detected yet, resulting in a false-negative result, and it is therefore worth repeating the test at a later date.
Mikor ajánlott STD vizsgálatra menni?
Hepatitis B is a viral liver infection that is spread through blood and body fluids (e.g., sexually). It can be asymptomatic for years while gradually damaging the liver.
HBsAg: shows whether you are currently carrying the virus.
Anti-HBs: shows whether you have protection – due to previous infection or vaccination.
Why is it important?
Chronic hepatitis B can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Without screening, an infected person can infect others without knowing it.

Mikor mutatható ki az STD fertőzés?
Ha a mintavétel túl korán történik, az eredmény ál-negatív lehet.
Ezért fontos figyelembe venni az egyes kórokozók kimutathatósági idejét:
-
Gonorrhea (tripper): 2–5 nap
-
Chlamydia: kb. 2 hét
-
HIV: 3 hét
-
Szifilisz: 4–5 hét
-
HPV: 1 hónap
-
Hepatitis B / C: 1 hónap
Erős gyanú esetén javasolt:
-
korai mintavétel,
-
ismételt szűrés az ablakperiódus letelte után.
Milyen STD-ket szűrünk a rendelőben?
-
chlamydia
-
gonorrhea (tripper)
-
ureaplasma
-
mycoplasma
-
HPV
-
szifilisz*
-
HIV*
-

-
HIV-1 antigén: a fertőzés korai szakaszában is kimutatható.
-
Antitestek: jelzik, hogy a szervezet találkozott-e a vírussal.
Miért fontos? -
A korai diagnózis lehetővé teszi a hatékony kezelést és a teljes életet.

Female STD testing
A gynecological examination is not painful, just unpleasant. The discomfort caused by the examination can be reduced by sufficient pelvic relaxation. During the examination, a speculum (duck) is used, which is placed in a closed state and then opened in the vagina. The smear is usually painless, and in practice it causes discomfort equivalent to a cancer screening.
Male STD testing
The test is not painful, but may be slightly uncomfortable. A sample is taken from the urethra for culture, which requires inserting a blunt-ended plastic stick up to a depth of 2 cm. If the urethra is inflamed, the test may be slightly more uncomfortable, but this can be overcome quickly.
