Emergency Contraception

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

Emergency contraceptive known as "the morning-after pill," offer an important safeguard against unintended pregnancies. In Hungary, these medications can only be dispensed with a medical prescription; they are prescription-only products.

The Effectiveness of Emergency Contraceptives

Emergency contraceptives can be effective up to 120 hours after unprotected intercourse. This extended timeframe ensures that even if some time has passed since the event, these pills can still offer protection against pregnancy. It's important to note that the only factor that decreases their efficacy is the time that has elapsed since the event. Therefore, it's crucial not to delay taking the pill.

When to Consider Using Emergency Contraceptives?

Emergency contraceptives are recommended in various scenarios, including:

  • When a partner's condom breaks or slips off

  • If no condom was used during intercourse

  • When withdrawal (pull-out) method fails

  • If regular birth control pills were missed

  • When vomiting or diarrhea affects pill absorption

  • Incorrect use of a vaginal ring (not in place for more than 3 hours or used for over 4 weeks).

Key Information about Emergency Contraceptives

Morning after pills are not abortion pills: It's important to clarify that emergency contraceptives are not abortion pills and should not be used in cases of confirmed pregnancy.

The Importance of Time:  The effectiveness of these pills decreases with time, so it's recommended to take them as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse.

Mechanism of Action: Emergency contraceptives are based on the hormone progesterone, specifically its effects on the corpus luteum

STD lab test

This pack looks at three serious sexually transmitted infections. The diseases can remain asymptomatic for a long time, so regular screening is key to prevention and treatment.

Hepatitis B (HBsAg + Anti-HBs)

Hepatitis B is a viral liver inflammation that spreads through blood and body fluids (e.g., sexually). It can remain asymptomatic for years while gradually damaging the liver.

HBsAg: Detects whether you are currently carrying the virus.

Anti-HBs: Shows if you have immunity – either from a past infection or vaccination.

Why is it important?
Chronic hepatitis B can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Without screening, an infected person may unknowingly transmit the virus to others.

Why is it important?

With early detection, HIV is now highly manageable, and those infected can live long, fulfilling lives – but timely diagnosis is essential.

HIV (HIV-1 Antigen + HIV 1,2 Antibodies)

  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the immune system. Without treatment, it can lead to AIDS, which means the collapse of immune defense.

  • HIV-1 antigen: Detects the virus in the early stages of infection.

  • Antibodies: Indicate the body’s immune response, showing whether it has already encountered HIV.

Why is it important?

With early detection, HIV is now treatable, and those infected can live long, full lives – but timely diagnosis is essential.

Syphilis (RPR + TPHA)

  • Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that initially produces subtle symptoms (painless ulcers, skin rashes). If left untreated, it can lead to severe neurological and organ damage years later.

  • RPR: A rapid screening test that indicates the immune response.

  • TPHA: A confirmatory test that specifically detects the pathogen.

Why is it important?

With early detection, syphilis is now highly treatable, and those infected can live long, full lives – but timely diagnosis is essential.
